Since the 90s several platforms and then governments began to drive for population control, they claimed that the world's resources would run out or become insufficient if the world population kept growing. Various governments - from the tightly controlled communist governments of China to the Socialist and lesser controlled governments of Europe and the democracy of USA, everyone began to adopt the theory that high population breeds poverty, from the family to the nation and everyone began to drive reduction in population as a means to reducing poverty. The theory also posited that the earth’s resources would be insufficient to cater for an ever increasing world population.
The reasons sounded so logical and true except that if you really think about it, what causes poverty is not population growth, what causes poverty is corruption, unresolved conflicts, racial discrimination leading to illiteracy and subjugation, poor governance and resource management. On the other hand, did you notice that from the Bible, God did not design humans to die in the first place? We were meant to live on this earth forever, from Adam to the latest child, that sounds to me like at a time, we will be innumerable men, covering the entire face of the earth and probably the moon, mars, every single planet – Now that sounds very big, just imagine. It also means we would have come up with perfect machine, we would have found perfect ways to sustain the universe, and a perfect way to live in outer planets. It implies that if we managed earth's resources better, it can sustain billions and billions of mankind.
Anyway, China who had almost crossed a Billion in number as at the 80s came up with the One Child policy and no one was allowed to have more than one child. Infact it was so bad that it assumed enormous persecutory proportions. Japan was simply caught away with its own technological advancement as the world's second largest economy, became very elitist and they literarily stop having children. Europe took the same route, stopped having children or aborted those still in the womb. The result, birth rate dropped critically, population dropped and the populace began to age. They got into Africa and began to drive the same agenda; they said Africa’s poverty was a product of their population and that people would control poverty when they controlled population. Meanwhile they forgot that Africa was going through some of its worst seasons, there were wars that raged because of the way the colonial masters transferred power, people were not educated or empowered to manage their life, there was not enough technology to till the land and provide food. Africa’s problem was never its population; Africa’s problem was empowering the population to solve its diverse social and intellectual problems.
Whatever! While everyone basked in the euphoria of modernization and it became fashionable for people to have dogs and cats instead of children, they forgot that people age, die and that population needs to be replenished. Today, Monaco is the oldest country in the world, with the average age of the population put at 48.9 years, followed by Japan with an average age of 44.6years. Infact the entire Europe is ageing at an increasing rate. People are growing old and with their cats and dogs dead and no children to cater for them, government now aggregates them in old people's home to be taken care of by the government till the die.
Fast forward into the 2010s, the concept of emerging economy started to spread, Africa became one of the emerging economies of the world because of their population, and it became the place to exploit for commodity sales. China became the "Eldorado" for entrepreneurs who had things to sell. The Chinese market with 1.3billion people and the Indian market with 1.2billion people became the place where every company must do business. Population became the strength and the base for such prosperity as have never been witnessed in the history of the world. So what did the proponents and propagators of population control begin to do? Now, they are setting up immigration policies, their governments are on drive to encourage the women to have more babies. In some parts of Europe, they would treat the woman like a queen if she became pregnant, they would also give men paternity leave of up to 3months - Imagine, 3 months with pay to sit and nurse the baby. The government would also pay a stipend to every child born and ensure that they are well taken care of by their parents. In Nov 2013, China, who had been notorious for their almost sinister one child policy eased off on the policy. Ok, that caught my attention. I thought, “Why would they want to lift the policy”? Because, as the story goes, in the next few years, China would not have enough young people in its labour pool to drive its growth and support what is called the large "baby boom" generation as it retires. China suddenly realized that they were called a world power because of their vast population and that management of resources, education and empowerment reduces poverty, not population control. So the question, “How wise were they in the first place”? Think of how many children were wasted for nothing since 1980 when they implemented the rule.
Ok another case, how many of us remember the "ing" business process of the late 90s and early 2000 - "Outsourcing". I particularly remembered one Harvard Business Review I read that spoke glowingly of the power of reducing production and labour costs by finding cheaper labour in foreign markets and outsourcing business to those locations to reduce cost and increase profit. At that time, everywhere you turned, you were inundated with stories of how one phone company moved operations to Taiwan or Thailand or Indonesia or China and how that was the best practise for savvy companies. Europe began to move all their businesses to Asia - China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia etc. Car factories moved to Asia, cloth factories moved to Asia, designer shoe companies moved to Asia, manufacturing companies, even phone and customer service companies moved to Asia. Everyone suddenly forgot that Europe became extremely rich because they collected raw materials from their colonies around the world and built big factories where they manufactured good and then shipped them out to the colonies to purchase. I recall how CEOs in Europe would gloat about how they were saving tonnes of money by outsourcing their customer service to India with all its related IT. All the world class brands Jaguar, Volvo, Benz, name it, all moved to Asia.
So what happened, in just 10 to 15 years, European economy crashed and Asia boomed. Business knowledge and management processes deepened in the once impoverished Asia. The people became wealthier and began to acquire the companies. The Asian Tigers were formed and they grew from being steeped in poverty to living in serious opulence and wealth. Sometimes in October 2013, it was said that China had over 300 Billionaires in Dollars; they took over and became world powers. But Europe, they began to fight for entitlements, rioting in their streets, no job, no healthcare and of course, no factories to employ them. And more sadly they forgot that riots don’t solve joblessness problems, it is industry that solves joblessness. Instead of organizing themselves to form companies and start new businesses, they marched their street carrying placards and asking the government to give them jobs. They forgot that for the past 10 or 15 years, their CEOs have been shifting all the businesses to Asia while they shared taxes and entitlement for doing nothing. While Chinese people worked several hours and forced children to stay in school, Europeans were busy paying stipends to children for just being stupid and smoking crack. How wise was the world and the CEOs?
Lastly, again business, do you remember the slogan "The World is a Global Village" and how that influenced business? Companies began to trade much more borderlessly. It was good and it is still good, but also some financial trades that were limited to Individual countries where they were controlled and regulated in their own silos were allowed to also go international or cross border to other climes where they could not be controlled or regulated anymore. The claim was that to be a global village, there should be no limits to our operations. They forgot that in intelligent designs for WANs, sometimes to manage the entire system and prevent system collapse, designers have to put their different components of the network in different silos and then join the silos at the point of least risk. Some countries stayed out or were kept out because they were not considered as savvy or developed, but the so called developed market had no hold bar. What happened? People began to give sub-prime loans in one country, package it and sell it to banks in another country and everyone made income until the day that the bubble busted. As financial institutions went down in America, it dragged along financial institution in other developed climes, especially Europe. Countries’ economies began to fail and soon the whole "developed" world was in chaos. Guess what, the developing world had to come to their rescue to provide funding by way of bonds so that the economies can survive. Today the USA owes China about $1.2 trillion, 8% of its total debt. Japan is owed $912 billion; the United Kingdom, $347 billion; Brazil, $211 billion; Taiwan, $153 billion; and Hong Kong, $122 billion. The question is again, how wise were the people who thought that unregulated borderless trading was what it meant to be a global village.
I think that the world always over exaggerates its wisdom. If they were wrong in all these decisions, you can imagine how obviously wrong the world is on the issue of gay marriage, abortion, legalizing smoking of Indian Hemp and other straight out atrocities too numerous to mention, all in the name of freedom, modernization and human right, so much that they are using aids as bait to enforce their so called modern wisdom. Meanwhile in China, the other day, the government enforced that TV contents be controlled because it was negatively influencing the morals of the populace. Africa has said a clear no to Gay Marriage ad abortion. You know what will happen again, in another 10 to 20 years, the western world will be back at the point where they realize that what they were driving was not wisdom in anyway but out-rightly stupid propositions from men with low intelligence and poor foresight.
