Think of it. All the aviation ministers in the past 16 years did nothing to improve the airports. The International Airport was still one dingy place without air conditioning, all the other airports in the nation were nothing to write home about, but Stella Oduah spent less than 4 years and in that time frame several airports have been improved, evidence, the Lagos local Airport. The Airport has gone from old ragged to Brand new beautiful. I was at the international Airport the other day and the immigration section of the Departure side has been so improved. No jokes, I think Stella Oduah tried and at least left something that would be credited to her. The only thing all the other ones had in common was that they all had one corruption issue or the other.
The last time I blogged, the Malaysian plane MH370 had not disappeared. Before that plane disappeared, I could have sworn that it was only in Nigeria that a whole plane can disappear and not be found for days, but this has proven that what happens in Nigeria is child's play. For over 1 month, the whole world has been looking for a plane and no one can find it. China, America, Australian, Malaysia, every one of them on the South China Sea, and still no one can find the plane that mysteriously disappeared, not even its debris.
Obviously the last time I blogged, a band of Boko Haram terrorists had not attacked a secondary school in Borno and taken their time to kill several students without one single security official showing up. They had not ransacked villages in Barma, had not bombed the Military barracks to try and free their captured brothers and most gruesomely, had not bombed Abuja Nyanya park on a busy Monday morning as people tried to get to their place of work, only for the Inspector General of Police to say that they have now tightened security around Abuja, after the Abuja had been bombed, - medicine after death,
The last time I blogged, Fulani herdsmen had not killed people in and around the northern villages - Benue, Plateau, Kaduna. Etc. They say they are Fulani herdsmen, so where do they find Ak47’s from, and why are they bent on ransacking village by village and even attacking the governor's convoy, leaving the Governor scampering for safety. The news goes on and one.
So I wondered, why did I not write anything about these issue or even publish my own opinion, as I did when the Pope Abdicated, or when the Prince had a Son, or when Madiba died or when Chinua Achebe passed on. It was not too difficult to find the reason why, I was tired. I was absorbed in my own issues trying to ensure that the issues that concerned me and my "business” made it through some of the biggest changes in "my" business. My absorption almost bothered on Apathy - Everything can be happening, as long as it does not happen to me or the people that are close to me.
Sometimes we get so overwhelmed with ourselves that Boko Haram bombing becomes news, Fulani herdsmen - news, missing plane - news, Sanusi removed, suspended or resigned, - more news, Oduah removed, - news, and I forgot something - unemployed youths die at stadia where they have gone to write test, and the Minister or the Head of Immigration just apologizes and then the story is waived because of bigger issues of national concern - that one too, news. Apathy because "my business" alone was overwhelming enough, I needn't add other people's headache.
I sense that sometimes, that is where we all are - Where we become apathetic, as long as it does not affect us, we do not care. But that can't be the way to live - For me, myself and I. Life has to have a greater purpose, and I have to make some space in my heart to lend an ear, a hand or even a voice to the plight of my brothers, our brothers, the nation, our nation. I may not be able to change the Nation yet, but I have the ability to change the people in my sphere of influence, and that is all that is required. If my influence can make them better people, better educated, better protected, better employed, better engaged, then I would have contributed something of worth. While we might blame those who did badly in this nation, those who did nothing - good or bad, are even worse. Imagine if we all were doing something with the gifts, talents and opportunities God has given us, to impact our sphere of influence, instead of being apathetic thinking it will never affect us, imagine how much better, when aggregated, our various efforts will make our nation be .
Ask yourself one question - What am I doing to impact my sphere of influence, my community etc.? What little change can I make.? And then, step out and do something!
